Special News Announcement

July 15th, 2024

Dear Friend of The Literacy Center,
A week ago, a 3-alarm fire that started in a residential home, spread to The Literacy Center. I am happy to report that everyone exited our building safely. Unfortunately, the fire destroyed our entire space, including classrooms, computer lab, and offices.

The Literacy Center is not unfamiliar with challenging situations. In March of 2020 when the pandemic lockdown hit the Lehigh Valley, we quickly moved all classes and services online. During this difficult transition, we retained 95% of our students. From 2020 to 2022, when we were completely virtual, we achieved some of the best student outcomes in the organization’s 47-year history. The transition online also allowed us to serve more people. Over the last five years, we have increased the number of adults served from 500 to over 1,500 adults annually.

The Literacy Center is a resilient organization with an incredible team of board members, staff, volunteers, and community partners who are regularly inspired by our amazing, highly motivated students. I am very proud to report that despite the closing of our physical space, The Literacy Center is operating at 100%. Our summer virtual classes for ESL, GED, and Digital Literacy are
running as scheduled and our in-person classes have been moved online. Our team is continuing to assist students with Support Services, College Access, and Career Counseling. With over 1,400 adults currently on our waitlist, The Literacy Center is experiencing an unprecedented need for our programs. This is why it’s so important that we continue delivering our essential classes and services to help meet the growing demand for adult education opportunities.

Although we remain fully operational, there could be additional costs in transitioning to a temporary workspace. While we are still assessing the extent of our needs, we welcome your support during this challenging time. If you would like to assist us during this transition, please consider making a financial contribution. You can donate by clicking on the button below. I would like to thank all the people and organizations that have reached out over the past week to offer assistance. I am moved by this tremendous outpouring of support. It proves the Lehigh Valley can overcome any obstacle or crisis when we work together.

We will continue to share updates as they become available. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 610-435-0680 or info@theliteracycenterlv.org. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Jen Doyle
Chief Executive Officer
