GED Program

The Literacy Center (TLC) offers classes to adult Pennsylvania residents who are seeking to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma (GED /HiSET). There are many reasons why young people are unable to compete high school, including the need to work to support their families, bullying, learning disabilities, and feeling unsafe at school. The GED High School Equivalency Credential, which includes four separate exams – Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies – provides adults with the opportunity to complete their high school education without the barrier of returning to the traditional classroom.*

What Do We Offer?

Framework of GED Classes

• Morning, afternoon, and evening sessions three days a week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
• Learning Skills Session focusing on Time Management, Goal Setting, Study Habits, and Test Taking Skills – competencies that will prepare you to be successful in our GED program
• A rigorous Math session followed by a combined Language Arts/Social Studies/Science session.  Each class has additional classroom assistants to make differentiated instruction available.

YES (Young Empowered Students) Program

Dropping out of high school is associated with a range of adverse life outcomes. Young people who do not complete high school, are more likely to:
• struggle with employment,
• live in poverty,
• be dependent on welfare benefits,
• have poor physical and mental health,
• engage in criminal activity more often than those with higher education levels

The Literacy Center’s unique YES Program began in October 2015. The Program targets “Out of School Youth” ages 18-24, who are not able to re-enter high school, but are seeking a High School Diploma. Students receive personalized attention from their GED Instructor and the GED Coordinator. The learning plan is specially designed to help students produce immediate success.

College Access Counseling

A College Access Counselor is available to guide adult students through the college search process. The Counselor will explain the application and admissions process and provide resources on colleges, job training programs, and financial aid.

Meet with the Counselor through one-on-one online sessions to get support in all aspects of your college search. The sessions will include:

1. Orientation
2. Goal Setting
3. Comparing Colleges
4. College Application Assistance
5. Financial Aid Application Assistance

Throughout the year, representatives from regional colleges and post-secondary schools will conduct Information Sessions remotely. These information sessions are open to the public.*

Tutoring

One-on-one tutoring is available for:

• Students who desire to work on one GED subject at a time
• Students who need additional tutoring after completing a session with a group
• Students who are not ready to take the GED exam yet, but would like to improve their reading, writing, and math skills
